Grand Rapids Public Schools have banned all backpacks from their schools after a string of incidents that involved two students bringing a handgun to their school on separate occasions.
Last week, a seven-year-old attending Cesar E. Chavez Elementary was found in possession of an unloaded handgun, followed by a third-grader bringing a loaded handgun to Stocking Elementary School yesterday morning.
Both incidents have now prompted District Chief of Staff Larry Johnson and other school administrators to tighten down their security measures in efforts to prevent another incident.
"This is not acceptable (and) we will not continue to tolerate it," Johnson said during a news conference yesterday afternoon.
