GRPS staff confiscate loaded handgun from student's backpack

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Staff members at Stocking Elementary in Grand Rapids found a loaded handgun in possession of a third grader this morning.

After being alerted by a fellow student that another student was likely in possession of a weapon, GRPS staff immediately located the student and conducted a search that revealed a gun inside the student's backpack.

“This is as serious as it gets for a school leader," said Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Leadriane Roby in a press release. "I’m deeply concerned, frustrated, and angry... This is not okay with me and it is not okay with our community."

Grand Rapids Police were notified by the GRPS staff members to continue the investigation as the press release states it will be addressed accordingly by district policy and law.
