Muskegon County Jail guards take plea deal after inmate death

Four Muskegon County Jail guards are agreeing to a plea deal after they were charged for allegedly neglecting an inmate who later died.

The guards pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charge of willful neglect of duty in court on Thursday.

The guards were originally charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Sgt. David VanderLaan and deputies Crystal Greve, Jeffery Patterson and Jamall Lane were all sentenced to 100 hours of community service as well as fines.

Inmate Paul Bulthouse died in April 2019 after suffering from repeated seizures while in a close-observation cell.
