DETROIT (WOOD-AM) - A lawsuit against the city of Grand Rapids and former police officer Christopher Schurr is seeking $100 million for the family of Patrick Lyoya.
The civil suit was announced by the legal team representing the Lyoya family yesterday in Detroit.
"It’s clear that Schurr unnecessarily escalated a situation involving an unarmed Black man," attorney Ven Johnson said in a statement. "Any claim by Schurr that he was in imminent fear for his life is absolutely unreasonable and untrue."
Schurr is still awaiting trial for second-degree murder after the officer-involved shooting death.
