Ballpoint pens create issues for ballot tabulation

Election workers in Kent County reported a handful of issues caused by ballpoint pens on Tuesday, however the issues were resolved quickly.

The issues caused some short delays for voters casting their ballots however their votes were counted.

Clerks prefer voters use Sharpies or similar fast-drying, non-smudging markers to vote.

Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus-Lyons says there were many conspiracy theories that Sharpies cancel out people's votes however that is not true.

Grand Rapids Township Precinct 4 Chairperson Barbara Ford says if ballpoint pens are used and the ink is not quite dry, it can rub off on the inside of the machine and can cause jams.
