Man handed 25-to-90-year sentence for fire that killed wife, children

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A 25-to-90-year prison sentence was handed down yesterday to a man who was charged with manslaughter following the deaths of his wife and three children in a Grand Rapids fire.

Robert Scales was sentenced yesterday.

The victims died of smoke inhalation from the fire, which had been started by Scales more than five feet away from the home.

Court records reveal that a personal protection order had been filed against him for threatening to burn the home and kill the family.
