GRFD 1st department in state to earn Infant Safe Sleep certification

The Grand Rapid Fire Department is the first in the state to receive the Infant Safe Sleep certification from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

GRFD says they have responded to 14 infant deaths in the past two years, eight of which were connected to unsafe sleep practices.

The department is currently training its firefighters to recognized unsafe-sleep practices and to offer education and resources for caregivers.

Other departments in Kent County are also participating in the program.
