The Big Three 7-15-22

1 The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office is investigating multiple incidents of theft at ULTA Beauty. The incidents happened on July 11 and 13 in Oshtemo Township.

Police say the crimes are committed by an organized crime group who have stolen up to $16,000 in merchandise, mainly perfume.

2 Ivana Trump, a longtime businesswoman and ex-wife of President Donald Trump, died Thursday in her home in New York City.

She was 73.

According to a statement from the New York Police Department, police received a 911 call in the afternoon and found a "73-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive." Ivana Trump was the mother of Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump.

3 A lawsuit has been filed with the Michigan Court of Appeals to prevent Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley from being on the general election ballot.

An activist group called Progress Michigan, while not the plaintiff in the suit, claims credit for assisting with research and financial support in the suit.

Kelley faces misdemeanor charges for his role in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The lawsuit says the western Michigan man’s participation makes him ineligible for office under the U.S. Constitution.

“Whether it’s Ryan Kelley or anyone else that was illegally at the Capitol trying to overturn the will of the people, there needs to be accountability,” said Lonnie Scott of Progress Michigan.

The Michigan Republican Party noted that the lawsuit was filed by attorney Mark Brewer, former head of the state Democratic Party.

The 14th Amendment states that anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. and has taken an oath to support the Constitution cannot hold a state office.

He has pleaded not guilty to disruptive conduct, injuring public property and entering restricted space without permission.

In May, an attempt to have Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene barred from the Georgia ballot under the 14th Amendment failed. She said she wasn’t aware of plans to storm the Capitol or disrupt the electoral count through violence.
