The new national three-digit dialing code to connect people in the middle of a mental health crisis to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will take effect in Michigan on Saturday.
Individuals in need of help will be able to call 988 to be connected with a trained crisis counselor.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel says the universal number means no matter where you live or where you call from, there will be help.
The original number, 1-800-273-8255, will remain active.
