Michigan State Police are awarding a trooper a medal of honor for his heroic actions during a traffic stop that left him paralyzed.
Trooper Jason DeVries received the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart at this year's Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police Awards Banquet Tuesday night.
Devries conducted a traffic stop on October 6, 2021 and found the driver did not have a license.
He put the driver into custody and got permission to search the vehicle.
DeVries asked the passenger, Isaac Ntabaazi, to exit the vehicle for the search.
Ntabaazi pulled out a gun and shot DeVries in the leg.
DeVries returned fire and was able to injure Ntabaazi and radio for help.
DeVries was paralyzed from the right knee down, due to his injuries.
