Officer fired from GRPD after shooting Patrick Lyoya

Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington says the officer who shot Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop has been fired from the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Chris Schurr waived his termination hearing, which he was guaranteed by his contract, so his termination was effective June 10.

GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom recommended Schurr be fired on June 9.

Washington says a chief cannot unilaterally fire an officer.

Schurr is facing a charge of second-degree murder for the April 4 shooting of Lyoya.
