Man standing trial after accused of starting fire that killed his family

A trial is underway for a man accused of starting a fire that killed his family.

Robert Scales is charged with involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of his wife Wanedia Scales, and children Xavier Woldeab, Robert Scales Jr. and Elijah Scales.

Their home on Dawes Avenue SE caught fire on February 5, 2020.

Kent County Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle says it was smoke that killed all four, not flames.

Prosecutors say they couldn't prove the deaths were intentional so they charged Scales with manslaughter instead.
