South Haven to enforce ban on pier jumping

South Haven Police say four people were fined $1,000 each for jumping off the North Pier Friday afternoon.

South Haven Police Chief Natalie Thompson says many people do not understand the dangers of jumping off the piers.

The new ordinance was passed in an effort to keep people safe after several water rescues and drownings in the area in recent years.

Thompson says the ordinance also protects first responders who risk their lives during rescues.
