Zeeland soldier laid to rest decades after WWII plane crash

ZEELAND (WOOD-AM) - Nearly 80 years after his plane went missing in New Guinea, a World War II soldier was laid to rest at Zeeland Cemetery yesterday.

Pastor Chad Pierce officiated the service for Air Force Corporal Laverne "Dirk" Van Dyke.

"In a county that is so divided in so many areas today, I think it’s time like this that remind us that we are one nation," Pierce told WOOD-TV.

Yesterday's service was attended by members of the military, the community and surviving members of Van Dyke's family.
