GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says he will be the one to decide whether charges will be filed against the Grand Rapids police officer at the center of the shooting death of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya - not Attorney General Dana Nessel.
"I’m doing this just like we did any other case and any other officer-involved shooting case,” Becker said.
Nessel said yesterday that, if asked, her office could handle the decision on charges.
“I always, always invite local prosecutors and police departments to refer the case to us," Nessel said.
Michigan State Police are still investigating the incident.
