Residents living on Spring Lake saw a barge improvise this week as ice thickened on the lake.
The barge was traveling from Grand Haven and had been used by the company Harbor Hawk, which builds seawalls and other water-related projects.
The crew had just completed a project and was in a race against the water to get back before ice formed.
When the water turned to ice, the crew used an excavator on the barge to break the ice to continue their travel.
