LANSING (WOOD-AM) - There's a renewed effort to end child marriages in Michigan.
Bipartisan legislation is said to be gaining support. Similar legislation has stalled twice in previous years.
"I was surprised that it was actually legal," Rep. Kara Hope, D-Holt, told WOOD-TV. "It didn’t seem like that could be actually true, but of course it is true."
Hope introduced the legislation.
More than 5,000 children were married in Michigan between 2000 and 2018, according to state records. Some of the children were as young as 14.
