Budget shortfalls ahead in GR

Officials at Grand Rapids City Hall say tough times are ahead due to budget shortfalls.

Grand Rapids Chief Financial Officer Molly Clarin says predicting where the shortfalls will happen has been difficult since the recession is not following the patterns of previous recessions.

So far, the city has been able to fill holes by putting some programs on hold, issuing a hiring freeze and dipping into savings.

The biggest variable to the city is income tax.

With more people working from home and not coming into the city to work, they may not have to pay the city income tax leading to a 20-million-dollar loss.
