Whitmer signs COVID-19 relief bill

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a COVID-19 relief bill on Tuesday.

The Legislature had approved $465 million dollars in spending however Whitmer line-item vetoed a $220 million dollar portion.

The money would be deposited into the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to help business fund benefits to workers that are laid off.

Whitmer said the money should be used toward the vaccine or other COVID-19 expenses and not to give bigger companies tax breaks.

The bill also included $55 million for grants to small businesses, $45 million in payments to individuals who were furloughed or laid off due to the pandemic and $3.5 million for grants to entertainment venues.

Those measures were approved.
