Battle Creek native Dustin Wellman is hopeful he will qualify for a spot in the first professional axe throwing league after competing in the World Axe Throwing Championships last week.
Wellman finished 33rd, one place shy of his goal and automatic qualification for the league starting in 2021.
He started axe throwing three years ago and had to build a facility in his backyard to continue practicing after COVID-19 caused axe houses to shut down.
Wellman's goal is to become a world champion.
