SANFORD, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday directed the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to investigate what caused two dams in central Michigan to fail.
Whitmer also asked EGLE to look at the larger issue of dam safety in the state and give recommendations that could prevent similar incidents.
Officials said the water levels on the Tittabawassee River rose after heavy rain last week, resulting in the failure of the Edenville and Sanford dams. Several houses and businesses were damaged or destroyed.
