GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Tuesday's election brought a record-breaking voter turnout according to state officials.
Voter turn out for most of my elections is roughly 12%, but during yesterday's election, roughly 25% of eligible voters participated.
2015 was when the previous record was set with a 23% turnout. Notable on that election day was a gas tax increase proposal was on the ballot across the state.
Overall 50 elections were held within 33 counties and 200 municipalities according to secretary of state officials.
What is especially notable is that nearly 99% of those who voted turned in absentee ballots.
Preliminary data shows that out of the over $180,000 people who voted, 1,775 ballots were cast in person, which averages to about one vote per hour at some location.
