Bug Expert: "Murder Hornet" Could Probably Survive in West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A Canadian bug expert says we could eventually see "murder hornets" in West Michigan.

But Gard Otis, a professor at the University of Guelph, says it's not yet known if they can establish themselves in North America.

"They live in places in Asia with snow in the winter. Grand Rapids gets a fair bit of snow, but it’s also tempered a little bit by being pretty close to the lake," Otis tells WOOD-TV.

The invasive insects have recently been discovered in Washington and can grow up to two inches.

Generally, they don't attack people unless they're provoked. However, they have been known to attack honey bees.
