Boston marathon champion racing in River Bank Run

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of athletes are converging on West Michigan for the Amway River Bank Run Saturday morning.

That includes some of the world's best in their respective distances.

But who is the best of the best? That’s up for debate.

For elite runner recruiter Greg Meyer, it’s an obvious choice.

His pick is wheelchair racer Daniel Romanchuk, and it’s hard to argue with that selection.

This year, he won the Boston and London marathons. Last year, he won New York and Chicago.

He is only 20-years-old and he has a special reason to enjoy West Michigan.

“Both my mom and dad are from Michigan,” Romanchuk said. “This is pretty much the one race I get to come here and see family. It’s wonderful."
