Shots fired in downtown GR; no injuries [UPDATED]

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A stretch of street near a downtown Grand Rapids venue was shut down Tuesday night after reports of shots fired.

Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Cathy Williams confirmed officers responded to a report of shots fired around 10 p.m. Tuesday night on Ottawa Avenue between Louis Street NW and Fulton Street W.

When officers arrived to the area they found a parked vehicle damaged, but no suspect nor victim.

Around 10:40 p.m., a concealed pistol license holder walked into GRPD headquarters, admitting to the shooting. The man told police someone in a passing vehicle pointed a gun at him and he fired in self defense.

Williams said the man turned his gun over to police.

The incident remains under investigation.

Ottawa Avenue was closed between Fulton and Louis streets while officers, including a forensics team, worked. It has since reopened.

Grand Rapids police said the incident was still under investigation when a concert at nearby 20 Monroe Live let out.

Amber Stokosa, marketing manager for 20 Monroe Live, says hundreds of people were attending the concert when the shots were fired. Stokosa said the venue notified everyone standing near their building and brought them inside.

Stokosa says security staff guided guests away from the scene when the concert ended around 10:30 p.m. Some concertgoers said they were told by security to go out through an emergency exit.
