City manager welcomes civil rights review of GRPD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — The Grand Rapids city manager says he welcomes the Michigan Department of Civil Rights' planned hearings about the conduct of the Grand Rapids Police Department.

"I welcome any inquiry," City Manager Mark Washington told 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday. "We have nothing to hide from an organizational perspective."

The MDCR announced Tuesday that it would hold hearings next week as a result of several incidents involving GRPD interactions with people of color that have sparked criticism. The public hearings will be held at the NAACP office at 1530 Madison Ave. SE from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 28.
