ALBION, Mich. (WOOD) — Albion’s city attorney says City Manager LaTonya Rufus has resigned “in the best interest of the city to avoid any liability.”
Attorney Cullen Harkness confirmed Rufus resigned Monday. He said as part of the “release agreement” between her and the city of Albion, Rufus must pay back $6,500 in moving expenses within 120 days and turn in her city-provided work phone.
Rufus took over as city manager in October, but was placed on administrative leave three months later, Harkness said. The city attorney would not elaborate on what led to Rufus’ discipline or the potential “liability” she posed.
Harkness says Albion city council members voted Monday to appoint Albion Department of Public Safety Chief Scott Kipp as interim city manager until a permanent replacement can be found. Kipp has served as acting city manager since Rufus was placed on leave.
