GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Heads up, Grand Rapids drivers: the construction cones are back on westbound I-96.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says westbound I-96 will be closed at E. Beltline Avenue/M-44 until approximately 1 p.m. Monday. Drivers can either take westbound I-196 or exit onto E. Beltline Avenue.
As part of the project, the I-96 on-ramps at Fulton Street and E. Beltline Avenue/M-44 will be closed until 3 p.m. Monday.
The work comes as MDOT prepares to begin the major part of its $60 million road project to reconstruct I-196 between Maryland and East Beltine avenues, reconfigure the I-96/1-196/East Beltine interchange and widen the westbound I-196 bridge over the Grand River at US-131.
Westbound I-196 will be closed over the Grand River from April 1 through Aug. 3 for widening and deck replacement.
In early June, eastbound I-96 will close at Lenoard Street while the I-196 overpass is replaced. That construction phase is expected to last five months. Traffic will be detoured onto southbound US-131 and eastbound I-196.
The East Beltline Avenue ramps to I-96 and the Leonard Street ramp to eastbound I-96 will be closed for the entirety of the project.
