GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For the last few weeks, Amy Bates has been sharing stories of her son AJ on Facebook.
Some are long and detailed, others short. The point of all of them is that her son loved life, however short it was, and made it his purpose to spread that love to others.

AJ was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome: two of his heart's chambers were underdeveloped. By the time he was 2, he had undergone three heart surgeries. By 10, he was on his fourth to repair a bad valve.
