GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Think East Grand Rapids is the safest city in West Michigan? Think again.
Gaines Township takes the top spot among West Michigan communities ranked by security firm SafeWise. The community just south of Kentwood ranked fourth among Michigan cities included in the list, just above East Grand Rapids.
SafeWise says it crunched crime statistics reported to the FBI for 2016 to come up with its top 20 rankings. Thetford Township, north of Flint had the lowest crime rate, with about 1 property crime per 1,000 residents and no violent crimes reported.
