District working to protect students boarding buses

SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — An Indiana driver is facing homicide charges after the truck she was driving hit and killed three children who were crossing a two-lane road to board a school bus.

Police say the bus had its stop arm extended and emergency lights on, but the driver didn’t stop.

“No one wants to be part of that tragedy that, unfortunately, that happened down in Indiana,” said Marc Fox, transportation director for Schoolcraft Community Schools.

Fox says running school bus stop signs happens more often than people think.

“This week we’ve already had three red-light runners, just this week alone, and that was on Monday and Tuesday,” he said.

In recent years, manufacturers have equipped school buses with high-definition cameras to nab red-light runners.
