KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Local leaders Tuesday unveiled renderings for a new facility aimed at improving health services in Kalamazoo County.
The new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services building will be located at 427 E. Alcott Street in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood, next to the existing MDHHS Family Health Center.
Local leaders said the two-story building will include underground parking and replace the MDHHS office on Stockbridge Avenue.
Project backers say the new building will provide one-stop shopping for health services in Kalamazoo County.
“So if somebody comes down this street, if they need any sort of assistance from the state that they qualify for, they can immediately take that and get the services that they need next door. It's also part of the vision that we had when we created the Department of Health and Human Services and brought these agencies together. Now, it will be up to the leaders here to make sure that this synergy works best to help,” explained MDHHS Director Nick Lyon.
Sen. Margret O’Brien said the project was years in the making.
“This is a watershed moment here at our health campus here in the neighborhood,” added Kalamazoo County Commission chairwoman Stephanie Moore.
Construction is expected to start in the next three months. The building will be completed at the beginning of 2020.
