KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Kalamazoo says starting Tuesday, it will insist people camping out in Bronson Park leave and that anyone who refuses could be arrested.
Protesters unhappy over how city officials have responded to homelessness have been camping out in the park for about a month. The city has worked to address their concerns and worked out a plan with protest leaders to move elsewhere, but the encampment remains.
On Monday evening, it seemed city officials were ready to put their foot down, saying the protesters are violating city ordinance because they don't have written permission to stay in the park and by having fires and grills. The city went on to say the park shouldn't be housing so many people because it doesn't have enough potable water or a sanitary place to prepare food.
