GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids church on Sunday celebrated the back-to-school season with its fourth annual free community carnival, providing families in need with school supplies.
"(We want to) share love with the community, to show them that we care about them and that they matter. We want them to be excited about their education, about school," said Erika Plunkett, who helped organize the event at Faith Church of Grand Rapids on Spencer Street NE.
The carnival featured food and games, but also aimed to help those who are less fortunate get what they need to have a successful school year.
"(We) especially want to reach people that are in need. If there's someone who needs clothing for their kids, we want to help fill that need," Plunkett said.
Church fundraisers and community donations provided clothing, backpacks, school supplies and even haircuts for attendees.
