Kalamazoo homelessness: 'We've got to do something'

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A recent debate about Kalamazoo park rules has drawn attention to homelessness in the city.

“It’s a little bit more complicated than people realize,” said Nathan Dannison, the senior minister at First Congregational Church in Kalamazoo, which is right next to Bronson Park. “My hope for this is it begins a conversation."

On Monday, the Kalamazoo City Commission rejected a proposal that would have further limited the number of hours people could sleep in public parks. The city attorney said the changes were suggested after an uptick in reports of problems this summer.

“It’s true that we have an issue downtown,” Dannison said. “Anybody who lives or works downtown knows that we've got to do something.”
