LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed and three others injured in a crash on Alden Nash Avenue south of Lowell Sunday afternoon, dispatchers say.
The single-car crash happened around 2:30 p.m. between 36th Street and Emery Drive in Lowell Township.
The Kent County Sheriff's Department said 71-year-old Thomas Phelps of Schoolcraft fell asleep at the wheel, at which point his SUV left the road and hit a tree on the passenger's side.
Phelps' front seat passenger, his 63-year-old wife Lu Ann Phelps, was killed in the crash.
The couple's grandchildren, ages 3 and 6, were in the car. They, along with Thomas Phelps, were hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, the sheriff's office said.
