GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A man died after being pulled from Lake Michigan in Grand Haven shortly after noon Sunday.
The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has identified him as 64-year-old David Knaffle of Wyoming.
Crews were initially called to the area of the State Park Pavilion on a report of a man struggling in the water. He went completely underwater before help arrived.
An off-duty firefighter from East Grand Rapids went into the water to try to find Knaffle. When emergency responders arrived, they got other beachgoers to form a human chain to find Knaffle about 12 minutes after the initial report.
CPR was performed and Knaffle was taken to nearby hospital, where he later died.
