Suspect in custody after attack, ramming Ottawa Co. cruiser

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — Ottawa County dispatchers say the suspect in an assault that seriously injured a female victim is in custody, after ramming a police cruiser during a chase.

It all started around 3:40 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of North Franklin Street in Zeeland. That's where the suspect assaulted the victim with some sort of weapon, according to Sgt. David Vanderploeg with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect left the scene. Deputies tried to stop him near Riley Street and US-31, but he drove off, ramming a police cruiser and hitting another vehicle before crashing into a power pole at Riley Street between Woodside Drive and 136th Avenue in Holland Township, according to Vanderploeg.

Vanderploeg said the suspect injured himself before he was taken into custody. He is being treated at a hospital and is expected to survive.
