GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos returned to West Michigan Tuesday to check out a school in Grand Rapids.
DeVos met with students and staff at Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Museum School as part of her Rethink School initiative to discover new student learning experiences.
DeVos saw Museum School teaching in action, including a hands-on experience with a young lake sturgeon that lives in the Grand River.
“I think it’s a great example of rethinking school, doing things differently to meet students’ needs. This is a collaborative approach, and the students that I met were clearly energized by their learning environment,” DeVos said.
The Museum School is in its third year. Next year, the district plans to open a high school patterned after the innovative middle school program. Those classes will meet at the former public museum building on Jefferson Avenue SE.
