Portage Northern will finally play on home turf

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Lacking its own stadium, Portage Northern High School was without a real home-field advantage in outdoor sports for more than half a century.

But that’s about to change because the school is getting a brand new sports facility.

Huskie Stadium officially opens this fall, but Portage Northern Principal Jim French gave 24 Hour News 8 a sneak peek of the new outdoor sports field Wednesday.

“The video board is up,” French said. “So that’s something that will be really cool.”

French says that when Portage Northern was built, school enrollment was growing fast and the focus was getting students into classrooms, not into the stands.

When the school didn't have a stadium, the football team had to play home games at old McCamely Field, which is right next to Portage Central High School and is showing its age.

“Yeah, it’s been our only field to serve the district well over 50, 60 years now, and it’s time for a facelift,” Portage Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bielang said.
