Detroit Grand Prix makes pit spot in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Detroit Grand Prix made a pit stop in downtown Grand Rapids Tuesday morning, just a few weeks before the event begins. Race crews brought a couple of cars that represent the event to the Fifth Third Bank plaza.

24 Hour News 8 interviewed Detroit Grand Prix defending sports car champion Jordan Taylor at the plaza. He gave details on this year's race as well as why it stands out compared to others.

"We've won there five of the last six years so we've got a good record. I think this year is going to be tougher than ever with all the new teams and manufacturers coming in to prototype," said Taylor. "I think we'll have our work cut out for us."

The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix is held from June 1 to June 3 at Belle Isle Park. The event features cars of the Verizon IndyCar Series, IMSA Weather Tech SportsCar Championship, high-flying trucks of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks and Trans Am Series.

"We've got sports car. We've got Indy Car which is open wheel. We've got super trucks which are cars that are jumping in the air. So over the weekend you'll see all forms of racing," said Taylor.

There will be live music all weekend, headlined by Country music duo Montgomery Gentry and Jody Watley featuring Shalamar Reloaded.

Fans can get a drink or a bite to eat in the Bud Light Beer Garden and Food Court.

The Detroit Sports District features interactive displays from Detroit professional sports teams and appearances from former and current local sports teams. The Meijer Fan Zone features tailgating games.

Tickets for the 2018 Detroit Grand Prix are on sale and start at $40.
