Indiana police are trying to recover around $600,000 after the money fell out of an armored Brinks truck onto an Indiana highway. Indiana State Police Corporal Brock McCooe said the "chaotic" scene felt like it was "something out of a movie scene, where you have bills, loose bills flying all over the interstate, vehicles stopping, people getting out of their cars." People who live in nearby homes were jumping the fence and running onto the busy highway to stuff their pockets full of cash.
Police said that taking the money is considered theft but anybody who voluntarily returns the cash will not face charges. McCooe added that some people have already come forward with money, but a substantial amount is still missing. He stated, "If you’re willing to, in good conscience, turn it back in, there’s amnesty, there’s no real questions asked if you’re willing to give it back."
Police said they have been receiving tips and been reviewing surveillance camera footage to identify the license plates of drivers who stopped to collect money. Among the people they are looking for are the driver of a school bus who stopped to grab cash and four people who were in a white pickup truck that was pulling a utility trailer who police say took an entire bag of cash.
The Brinks employees in the armored truck said they are not sure if the doors opened due to a mechanical failure or human error.
