GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A last-minute venue change to Grand Rapids for a statewide gymnastics meet served as a metaphor for those committed to the sport.
The 2018 Xcel State Meet was initially planned to be held in Lansing, but the original host gym was named throughout the sentencings of Larry Nassar, a former sports doctor who sexually abused his patients, many of them gymnasts.
Hosting a meet of Xcel's size typically takes a year of planning, but together Grand Rapids Gymnastics and Livonia Ultimate Gymnastics were able to pull it off in a few months. It was held at DeVos Place this weekend.
