GRPD: Man sneaks into public pool, drowns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 21-year-old man is dead after drowning in a closed Grand Rapids public pool Tuesday morning.

Grand Rapids police told 24 Hour News 8 that around 5:30 a.m. the man and others jumped the fence at Richmond Park pool, located on the city’s northwest side.

The man, who police say didn’t know how to swim, was unable to get out of the pool.

Police said it took some time for authorities to arrive on scene because none of the men had cellphones to call for help. When police arrived on scene, authorities dove into the pool, pulled him out and performed CPR.

The man was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.

Police said they have questioned and released one man, and are searching for another.

The City of Grand Rapids said the pool at Richmond Park will be closed until further notice.

The incident remains under investigation.
