VP Mike Pence walks in Grandville 4th of July parade

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – Vice President Mike Pence and his wife greeted members of the West Michigan community Tuesday while they walked in Grandville’s Fourth of July parade.

Air Force Two landed at Gerald R. Ford International Airport just before 10:30 a.m. in Cascade Township. The vice president confirmed his visit, which had been highly rumored, on Twitter Tuesday morning right around the time his plane landed, saying, “Karen & I area looking forward to walking in the Grandville Independence Day Parade later today!”

Prior to his arrival, temporary flight restrictions were put in place over Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Flight restrictions were also issued over Grandville during the parade, which began at 11 a.m.

Before the parade started, 24 Hour News 8 saw local police and secret service members scanning parade attendees along the parade route, which followed Wilson Avenue from 44th Street to Prairie Street.

Prior to Tuesday, the city told 24 Hour News 8 it was making preparations, including upping police presence and security, in case the vice president did come to the parade.

Both Gov. Rick Snyder and U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga also walked in the parade.

24 Hour News 8 has several crews covering the vice president’s visit. Stay with woodtv.com for updates and tune in to 24 Hour News 8 at 5 for the latest from political reporter Rick Albin, who was at the parade.
