WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — The hunt for a group of break-in suspects in Ottawa County has ended in a crash, following a police chase that spanned two counties and topped 90 mph.
Ottawa County dispatchers say it started with a break-in in the Borculo area Thursday morning. When Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the suspects’ vehicle was leaving.
Deputies had received information that there was a weapon in the vehicle, which didn’t have a license plate. At that point, the pursuit was on.
“We have to weigh in the factors. This was a home invasion (and) the suspects were believed to be armed. There was a risk to the public here if they weren’t captured,” said Capt. John Wolffis.
The chase began just before 9:30 a.m. Authorities followed the vehicle for about 20 miles, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph in rural Ottawa County. At one point deputies backed off, but they were still able to follow the suspects.
The suspects’ vehicle hit stop sticks in two locations. They headed east, crossing into Kent County, where Grandville then Wyoming police got involved.
The suspects continued east on 28th Street, where a witness reported seeing up to eight Ottawa County patrol vehicles following them.
The suspects headed south on Byron Center Avenue, where they crashed just north of 44th Street in Wyoming.
