Radiothon donations surpass $600,000 for Helen DeVos Children's Hospital

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Day 2 of the 26th annual radiothon for Helen DeVos Children's Hospital concluded Friday at 7 p.m. on WOOD Radio's sister stations, Star 105.7 and B93.

A total of $653,910 was raised - one of the highest totals ever. During the final hour or so, every donated dollar was tripled. The Triple Match was courtesy of Wendy's.

Dr. James Fahner is the hospital's medical director of Philanthropy Education. He said Thursday on West Michigan's Morning News that the life of someone you know has been touched by the care at Helen DeVos.

"Whether it's a child, grandchild, niece or nephew, but for sure it's been a child in your child's school, it's been someone down the street in your neighborhood, it's someone who attends your church," Fahner told WOOD Radio.

When you walk into Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, you instantly realize it is designed with the child in mind.

"This is a place that's sized and shaped, colored and scaled and put together, specifically designed for the unique care of kids and families," Dr. Fahner said.

He mentioned that HDCH has state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge clinical research programs that bringing promising therapies to kids. And he said there is a special feeling when you walk into Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

"You feel surrounded by this group of caregivers who are filled with care and compassion, and kids are what they care about," Fahner said.
