WEST MICHIGAN -- Kent County officials say 26,562 ballots were cast in Tuesday's annual school elections.
That is about a 17-percent turnout among registered voters. The county reports that operating millage renewals passed by large margins in the following districts: Caledonia, Forest Hills, Kelloggsville, Kentwood, Lakeview, Lowell and Sparta.
The sinking fund millage proposal for the Greenville Public Schools passed by just 10 votes, 264-to-254. A bond proposal for the Lakewood Public Schools went down to defeat. The bond proposal for the Northview Public Schools passed.
In Ottawa County. The voter turnout was roughly 21.5 percent. An $88 million school bond proposal for the Allendale Public Schools went down to defeat.
Elsewhere in Ottawa County, the special education millage proposal for the Ottawa County Intermediate School District passed, roughly 59 percent to 41 percent.
Operating millage proposals were passed in the following school districts ... Grand Haven, the City of Holland, West Ottawa and Zeeland.
In Muskegon County, a bond proposal for the Fruitport Community Schools was rejected by 17 votes. Muskegon Township's request for 5-point-25 mills was defeated. It would have funded public safety through the township's general fund. A bond proposal for the Fruitport Community Schools was rejected by 17 votes, 319-to-302.
In Montcalm County, voters passed a public safety proposal for Ferris Township, while a fire millage in Newaygo County's Bridgeton Township was rejected. A public safety millage was defeated in Barry County's Woodland Township, as well.
