GRFD releases name of man who drowned in Riverside Park

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Fire Department has announced that 28-year-old Miguel Angel Correa of Walker was the man who drowned last Thursday night, June 6, in the Grand River north of downtown.

The drowning occurred near the north end of Riverside Park. The fire department's water rescue team recovered the body the next day, in about seven to eight feet of water.

The fire department waited for the Kent County Medical Examiner's Office to confirm Correa's identity and for police to notify his family, before releasing Correa's name.

"Mr. Correa was observed having difficulties in the river," the GRFD said in a news release. "A bystander attempted swimming to aid Correa, but could not reach him before he slipped beneath the river surface. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, but were unable to locate Correa.

"His body was recovered the next day by GRFD rescue divers, with the assistance of the Kent County Dive Team, and Grand Rapids Police Department. The Kent County Medical Examiner has ruled the death, asphyxia due to drowning. He was a resident of Walker, Michigan."
