MSP sergeant dies; leaves his mark as Aviation Unit expert, and more

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Michigan State Police Sixth District is remembering Sgt. Matt Rogers, a member of its Grand Rapids post and Special Operations Division's Aviation Unit.

In a social media post, MSP said he was found unresponsive in his home Sunday morning. No cause of death was listed. Details such as age were not available at the time of this report.

Troopers describe Sergeant Rogers as, "A loving father, devoted friend, mentor, and dutiful community servant."

Services are being handled by Pederson Funeral Home of Rockford.

State Police say Rogers was a graduate of the 113th Trooper Recruit School. He also served at the Rockford and Wayland state police posts.

Rogers entered the MSP in September 1995, working  road patrol, narcotics and detective trooper positions at the MSP Rockford Post. He was promoted to sergeant of the Precision Driving Unit in March 2009.

His LinkedIn website page shows that Rogers had been with the Michigan State Police for more than 25 years, and was serving as an MSP aircraft pilot in recent years, as well as his duties as sergeant. Prior to that, he had been a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) sergeant for the Aviation Unit and ran the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program.

Prior to his police career, Rogers was a fabrication shop manager at a conveyor company in Grandville. His college background was in aviation at Western Michigan University and Jackson Community College.
